As many businesses would attest, building strong relationships is an important stepping stone for success. For Queensland Thermo King (QTK Group), a strong people focus has allowed the business to grow and flourish.

Established in 2003, after acquiring the Queensland Thermo King dealership, Spectra, QTK Group operates as the Queensland and Northern Territory dealer for Thermo King’s truck and trailer products, and the national dealer for Thermo King bus air conditioning.

The past decade has been a period of phenomenal growth for QTK. Its purpose built facility was opened in 2010; and the business was appointed as a master sales, service and parts dealer for the Thermo King bus air conditioning product under the Thermo King Bus Australia banner, which led to the opening of branches in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. QTK is also a premium tailgate supplier in Queensland and Northern Territory for the Anteo brand.

QTK recently expanded into a new purpose built facility in Melbourne that features easy undercover access for six buses, a driver waiting room, spare parts facility and training rooms. The business has also purchased land in Brisbane to expand on the current facility. Once completed, this will almost double the undercover working space, adding further warehousing, and bus service and truck and trailer install bays. This recent expansion further cements QTK’s position as Australia’s largest Thermo King dealership.

It also has the biggest stockholding for Thermo King in Australia. Trailer, truck and bus units are stored at QTK’s warehouse facilities, and the company also carries approximately 3 million dollars in spare parts across four national depots, at any given time.

According to Grant Turner, General Manager for QTK, a strong people focus – both its customers and its staff – has been one of the key drivers of the company’s continued expansion.

“Key to QTK Group’s success is the number of long term and loyal employees, who understand the bigger picture. We employ approximately 90 staff, and 25% of our staff have served for greater than 10 years, with a number of those serving the company for over 15 years. Each year we also welcome at least two new apprentices into the business,” he says.

QTK is also a strong believer of promoting from within the business, with many managers having worked their way up through the company. And this was the case for Grant too. He has worked for QTK for almost 20 years, starting as a service technician and working his way up to his current role of General Manager, a position he has held for the past three years.

Grant takes a hands-on approach to his work and understands the importance of maintaining customer relationships. He says that QTK prides itself on establishing solid relationships with its loyal customers, as well as going the extra mile to welcome new customers and develop new business relationships – in turn, helping to get businesses up and moving.

QTK has become renowned for its refrigeration and air-conditioning serviceability and for boasting a wide service network, with Thermo King Bus Australia having a nationwide footprint.

Grant says his team is comprised of experienced, long-term employees who understand that fleet uptime is essential for the healthy operation of transport businesses. “We adopt a personalised approach to service and all QTK branches are in tune with the customers they work with,” Grant adds.

QTK’s Darra based facility incorporates a workshop that is quite unique when compared to those in other states, due largely to the climatic conditions it is faced with. The workshop is open from 6am until 6pm, but is flexible to accommodate the needs of its customers. Featuring a vast open design, with bigger service hubs and flexible spaces to work in, QTK offers its customers full transparency. The facility also employs a designated Thermo King trainer, who trains the company’s technicians, agents and operators. QTK is also a part of the Thermo King dealership network, with 24/7 emergency service and technical support in every state.

QTK employs 50 technicians across four states. It also operates 35 mobile service vehicles, which travel as far north as Bundaberg and as far west as Goondiwindi. QTK also offers customised maintenance packages, from fully optioned packages to monthly yard checks that include
fleet monitoring.
