Icing on the cake

Having a long history providing engineering and repair work for truck operators, around four years ago Boardman Engineering added Razor tarp system installation and repairs to its portfolio. Today Razor tarp work accounts for a significant part of the workload.

Based in Geelong, Victoria, Boardman Engineering offers a diverse range of engineering services for truck, trailer and earthmoving equipment operators.

The company specialises in heavy repairs and fabrications for the transport and earthmoving industries, carried out by a team of highly experienced and qualified boilermakers and fitter & turners.
Managing Director, Andrew Boardman, says the Razor motor and tarp work has become an important facet of the business as it has made the company more of a one-stop-shop for truck operators.

“We got into the tarp work because we could see there was an untapped potential within the greater Geelong region to cater for the tarping needs of truck operators,” Andrew says.

“We identified this niche where we could slot into the tarp work which led to us jumping onboard with Razor.”

Andrew goes on to say that this move has seen Boardman Engineering go from strength to strength, with the tarp work having attracted a lot of new customers, some of whom have then sought other services from the company.

“We have customers who initially came to us for Razor work and then ask us to weld up cracks in the body or fit a new floor, for example,” Andrew explains.

“We fit complete Razor auto tarping systems to new trailers and bodies and also retrofit them to existing equipment.

“We also have technicians trained in the service and repairs as well as electrical and mechanical fault-finding aspects of the Razor installations.”

Andrew stresses that picking up the Razor work has added significant value to the business and enabled it to grow and keep pace with the ever-evolving transport industry.

“If we’d remained solely as the general engineering company we were 30 years ago we wouldn’t have survived in this modern environment,” he remarks.

“The Razor element has turned us into a company where everyone is flat out every day which is a great way to be.”

As for the future, Andrew says he continues to look for new opportunities to add value to his customers’ transport operations.

“Every six months we retrain our technicians on the Razor products to make sure they stay right up to date,” he says.

“Razor is always willing to give us advice on rectifying any niggly issues we encounter and we enjoy a really good line of communication between our company and Razor. This enables us to provide the best possible service to our customers with this equipment.”
