Tieman’s New PBS ‘Super Triple’

Bringing to market another new Performance-Based Standards–approved combination – the largest triple road train to operate in Australia – highlights the commitment that Tieman Tankers has to helping Great Southern Fuels lead the way in fuel distribution.

Great Southern Fuels is a bulk fuel and lubricant distributor dedicated to providing efficient customer service and maintaining a high public profile throughout various regional centres in the Great Southern, Upper Great Southern and Central Wheatbelt regions of Western Australia.

The business originally started in Lake Grace in July 1976 and has grown to incorporate major depots at Katanning, Narrogin, Albany, Corrigin, Koorda, Wongan Hills, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Kewdale, Moora, Merredin, Jerramungup, Carnamah and other regional locations.

It has expanded from a one-truck operation started by the two directors of the company, Allan & Faye McWhirter, and now operates and/or supplies over 85 of the state’s rural BP retail outlets and delivers to metropolitan retail sites and BP commercial accounts.

To achieve the best payload in the safest and most productive manner, Steve McWhirter of Great Southern Fuels, specified a new Tieman ‘Super Triple’ combination which has a Gross Combination Mass (GCM) of 168 tonnes and is approved to travel on Level 4 roads delivering approximately 142,000 litres of diesel fuel to remote mine sites in WA. This is the largest fuel triple road train combination operating in Australia.

Each quad-axle tanker has a capacity of 50,000 litres – the rear axle being a steer axle to optimise swept path. The tankers have unique ‘off road’ structural design features similar to Tieman’s ‘Bush Bullet’ design to ensure reliability and durability for the freight task of delivering fuel to remote mine sites in WA.

For Steve, ensuring vehicle operator safety – as well as the safety of other road users and the wider community – was a deciding factor in investing in Tieman’s ‘Super Triple’.

“The safety aspects of the ‘Super Triple’, in terms of road stability, are unbelievable,” he says. “There’s no swaying or movement from side to side at speed which allows the driver to concentrate on the road ahead instead of worrying about how the last trailer is tracking.”

Fleet safety is a top priority in the fuel distribution business according to Steve. “In the industry we operate in, every advantage counts. When we couple a Volvo FH16 700 HP to a Tieman ‘Super Triple’, we have created a whole new world of performance with the ultimate in driver safety and comfort along with superior performance in dynamic stability and payload.”

WA Main Roads have again been instrumental in working closely with both Tieman Tankers and Great Southern Fuels to allow this new innovation to operate on regional Level 4 roads in WA. Sixteen PBS performance measures had to pass simulation and supporting evidence provided by Tieman on swept path performance. Their in house PBS expertise being an industry point of difference to Tieman customers all around the country.

“We are proud to again be first to market with another new PBS innovation and our team will continue to collaborate with Road Owners around Australia to introduce more efficient and safer tanker combinations,” Tieman Tanker’s Director, Col Tieman, says. “Whether for bulk liquid or dry bulk products, we are changing the game in productivity for our customers around Australia.”

Great Southern Fuels commissioned Tieman for their  PBS ‘Super Triple’ knowing well their capability.

“The Tieman team are always happy to help, work closely with customers on new designs and also deliver a great Australian made product that we know and trust,” Steve says. “Their  after-sales support is the same as their pre-sales support – they don’t just sell you a tanker, they are always there to answer questions and assist. Tieman is an excellent company to partner with.”
