Versatile solution: Palfinger T22A Dino Hookloader

When Wanless Waste Management was searching for new equipment to cater to business growth, Palfinger’s T22A DINO Hookloaders met the brief. As they are capable of lifting bins of various rail widths and hook heights, it means one unit can cater to many tasks.

Family owned and operated, Wanless Waste Management has worked in commercial and domestic waste collection and recycling for the past 60 years. Dean Wanless is at the helm as Managing Director and the business operates across the eastern seaboard – with three sites in Sydney, one in Melbourne and another recently reopened in Brisbane.

Wanless has its origins in Brisbane and has re-entered the commercial market with new distinctive branding and a renewed energy for waste and recycling collection.

This brought about the need to introduce a new Brisbane fleet. After investigating the hookloaders available, Peter O’Malley, Queensland General Manager at Wanless Waste Management, says Palfinger’s T22A DINO Hookloaders provided the perfect solution, with four of these purchased so far – two for the Brisbane operation and two for Sydney.

Designed for compatibility with multiple rail widths and capable of collecting internal or external locking containers, the T22A DINO Hookloaders are opening doors to service a wider scope of customers. “These hookloaders have enabled us to increase our coverage and our offerings. We’re now able to provide the sector with the alternative service line of hook bin services, which complements the businesses growth strategies. This means we’re able to provide a full service to our clients,” says Peter.

“It gives us scope to be able to pick up different scales of bins, both in terms of rail width and hook height, which means we can work with a wider range of customers. A lot of hookloaders are suited to a certain hook height and rail width, whereas this gives us the flexibility to service more types of equipment.”

According to Glen Woodrow, Account Manager at Gough Palfinger Australia, the T22A DINO Hookloader has become a popular choice for the Australian waste industry. “The hookloader market in Australia is different to anywhere else in the world. Here, we have different bins that cater only to specific hookloaders, which means you can’t pick up all the bins with just one machine. Palfinger developed the T22A DINO Hookloader – a multiple rail width, multiple hook height hookloader – as a solution to this problem, as it can pick up about 90 per cent of the bins used in Australia,” he says.

The T22A DINO Hookloader is manufactured from high-tensile steel for maximum durability and higher payloads. It is a zero bin clearance unit that compensates for zero tunnel clearance by having raised container supports. The multi rail compatibility means it can even lift older cable truck containers as well.

Available with a variety of options, the T22A DINO Hookloader can be customised to best suit client needs. The four new units purchased by Wanless feature articulating arms, hydraulic tarp rollers, rear cab-mounted oil tanks, and hydraulic front bin locks which can secure various bin configurations, for added security and peace of mind.

This flexibility is combined with optimum reliability and durability. All of the hookloader’s main components are sand blasted, degreased, primed and electro statically coated prior to assembly. All other components are treated with anti-corrosion coatings, and the unit is finished with high quality paint protection. This all combines to achieve increased service life of the equipment.

For Wanless, Palfinger’s trusted service and support were seen as another major drawcard, with products supported by 36 service partners throughout Australia.

“Wanless had previously looked at purchasing some of these units at our various locations and have chosen to go with the T22A DINO Hookloaders because they are reliable, durable and are supported by a strong aftersales service network. We were able to purchase the equipment locally, with an excellent handover from Glen. Since the first unit was put to work in May, we’ve found it to be fantastic and really sturdy,” says Peter.

“For us, service is extremely important and the service we’ve received from Palfinger has all been really positive. In the waste industry, we operate 365 days a year, so we rely on quality equipment and excellent service to keep our fleet on the road. We can’t afford any downtime. The fact that these hookloaders are being built by Palfinger and serviced by Palfinger, rather than contractors or suppliers, was a big thing for us too.”
