A champion for fluid power

With close to 20 years of selling DC power packs in Australia, PT Hydraulics have released the Boss range of products. Trailer Magazine speaks to Mark Hobbs, the National Product Manager for Boss Transport Markets, to learn more.

”After a change in supplier contracts in 2017, PT Hydraulics was able to source a product that was suited perfectly for the Australian market and complemented the range of products PT Hydraulics already had to offer,” Mark says.

When discussing the products in the Boss Transport range, Mark says that PT Hydraulics have actually been selling the Boss brand for over five years through its AG cylinder range.

These cylinders are available in a range of sizes from 1.5’ right up to 5’ bore size, with strokes up to 48’ long. Their early success has been through the ability to supply OEM business with a high-quality product at an exceptional price.

The Boss DC power packs are supplied through renowned Californian Company, KTI Hydraulics Inc., which has more than 20 years of experience in supplying the North American market in excess of 100,000 power packs per year.

Mark says that being able to work with one of the largest suppliers of power packs in the US boosted PT Hydraulics’ confidence because it not only had a quality product but could also leverage the policies and procedures of an ISO certified company to fully support the Boss product range in Australia.

A combination of PT Hydraulics’ extensive experience paired with the influence of KTI’s team of experts allowed the business to develop its own range of DC power packs into a solution to best suit Australian customers’ expectations.

“We know what our customers expect from a supplier and we are able to provide this through putting stock on the shelf of both pre-built product and individual components,” Mark says.

“At PT Hydraulics we have always provided our customers the ability to customise their power packs and this hasn’t changed with the Boss products.
“We can mix and match to build over 20 circuits with both AC and DC motors and 19 different reservoir sizes. It really does allow us to provide every customer a pack for all applications.”

Another advantage of the Boss power pack is its Pressure Balanced Gear Pump. This pump provides a high level of efficiency compared to older fixed displacement pumps. The amount of slippage in the gears of a fixed displacement pump enables the oil to bypass however with a pressure balanced pump the gap between the top and bottom plate is minimised as the pressure in the pump increases which then increases the efficiencies of the gears.

Over the last 12 months PT Hydraulics and Boss Hydraulics have also added valve options which include a range of Cetop and stackable valves. These valves complement the power packs with the ability to mount directly onto the packs through the use of custom manifolds or be used as standalone valves.
Manufactured in Europe, these are durable, high quality valves with a full range of sandwich valve options available. A complete range of mobile valves are also now available, created specifically for the Australian transport industry, with a number of application options ranging from 1-7 spools.

Completing the valve range are the counter balance valves made to suit the Boss cylinders with a ‘Banjo’ style connection.

The complete Boss product range is stocked in a number of locations with its main warehouse being in Melbourne and satellite stocking locations in Queensland and Western Australia.

“Our team of experts are based all over Australia to fully support their customers on the ground, with fast quoting, service and advice at your fingertips,” Mark says. “For more information on the Boss range of products contact us on 1300 BOSS HYD (1300 267 749) or sales@bosshydraulics.com.au.”

Fast Fact
In 1935, Ritch Engineering commenced manufacturing of high-pressure hydraulics in Melbourne, Australia. SPX Corporation of USA purchased Ritch Engineering and so Power Team Australia was formed in 1989. PT Hydraulics was founded in 2003 as a result of a management buyout of the Australian hydraulics operations of SPX Corporation (Fluid Power Division).
