Industry echoes positive mental health message: R U OK?

  • Posted on Friday 13th, September 2019.

Australia’s road transport industry, from truck and trailer manufacturers to freight businesses, have shown their support for the R U OK? initiative this week.

R U OK? Day, which was held 12 September this year, is a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone to ask ‘are you ok?’ and to remember every day of the year to support people who may be struggling with life.

Trailer Manufacturer, MaxiTRANS, supported R U OK? with a special promotion where one per cent of all purchases made on 12 September would be donated to the non-profit organisation.

Commercial vehicle manufacturer, Scania Australia, participated in this mental health initiative across its branches and dealer support centre.

Hi-Trans Express CEO, Tony Mellick, encouraged the R U OK? message across his business with decorated cupcakes.

R U OK? CEO, Katherine Newton, said it is important to deliver the R U OK? message to people in ways that keep pace with changing technology.

“We know the majority of Australians believe talking to someone who’s struggling can make a difference,” said Newton. We are focused on building confidence in people, so they know when and how to have an R U OK? conversation. It’s vital we utilise new ways to build that confidence and ‘RUOK Mate’ has the potential to do that in a way that we have not seen before. We hope to empower people to trust their gut instinct and ask the question as soon as they spot the signs that someone might be struggling with life.”

RUOK Mate is an app that provides strategies on what to do if someone is not ok. Users can access the interactive conversation scenarios on a Google Home or Google Assistant enabled smartphone/device by simply saying “hey Google, talk to RUOK Mate”.

R U OK? started in 2009 as a national initiative that aims to bring Australia together to prevent suicide.
