The Port of Melbourne has appointed Jim Cooper to the role of Executive General Manager – Commercial.

Assuming responsibility for the Port of Melbourne’s business service functions, Cooper will bring a wealth of related experience given his long career as an executive in the Australian ports industry.

Cooper served as Chief Executive Officer at the Port of Portland for 8 years, where he oversaw strong growth in trade and the development of new infrastructure.

Port of Melbourne CEO, Brendan Bourke, said the appointment of Cooper came at an important time when the port looked to grow volumes and attract new business.

“The Port of Melbourne is aligned with the commercial interests of our tenants and customers to grow the port to ensure a sustainable competitive supply chain,” said Bourke.

“Jim brings to the Port of Melbourne a strong commitment to safety, customer service and sustainability and will be a strong advocate for the port’s tenants and customers,” he said.

Cooper said he was excited with his appointment and looked forward to commencing the new role.

“As Australia’s largest port, the Port of Melbourne has the opportunity to drive significant public policy outcomes that will enhance its competitive position,” said Cooper.

“I’m looking forward to working collaboratively with industry stakeholders to explore and realise business opportunities”, he said.

Cooper served as a member of the Victorian Ministerial Freight Reference Group, and has been the Deputy Chairman of Ports Australia and the Chairman of the Committee for Portland.

Cooper will commence his role in late July.
