Porthaul expands fleet for new United contract

  • Posted on Tuesday 28th, March 2017.

Victoria-based transport company, Porthaul, has invested in three new Mercedes-Benz Actros 2663 and three Freighter Super A-double combinations to service a contract with United International Container Services (UICS).

Porthaul General Manager, James Williamson, said the 34m Freighter A-double combinations were custom built for the container-carrying freight task.

"The new combinations feature Air CTI digital tyre pressure readers on the trailers, allowing the driver to be alerted in the cab should there be a decrease in tyre pressure," Williamson told CRTNews.

UICS, which began trading in February 2017, is a new export/import and packing facility in Mt Gambier, South Australia, run by General Manager, Debbie Blok.

Williamson told CRTNews the new A-double combinations and will carry full weight containers between the UICS packing facility in Mt Gambier and the Port of Melbourne.

"We purchased the Mercedes-Benz Actros 2663 for its fuel economy and rideability for the long distance haul," Williamson said.

"They are all fitted with Mass IAP and GPS with live camera feeds directly to our operations managers."

According to UICS, the facility is the only AQUIS accredited site in the Green Triangle. It can cater for any import/export product from green sawn timber to milk powder and refrigerated products.

"The vehicles took 12 months to design and process but we now have the first three combinations already hard at work for United. We have nearly a dozen more to come in the next 12 months," Williamson said.

"Porthaul has been awarded a long term contract with United and will expand our operations alongside United as it grows."
