The Drake Group appoints Bill Law as Group Production Manager

  • Posted on Wednesday 5th, December 2018.

In a move that is expected to further shore up the integration of O’Phee Trailers into the Drake Group’s operations, Bill Law has been appointed to the role of Group Production Manager.

Law will be responsible for ensuring ongoing efficiencies and optimised quality control in the production processes of both the heavy haulage trailer and semi-trailer offerings of The Drake Group.

For the past 14 years the role has been proficiently undertaken by Steve Collins who joined The Drake Group in July 2002. At the time, Drake’s staff numbered around 40, a figure that has now ballooned to 265. Steve has played a major role in the growth of the business to date.

Collins will move to the newly created role of Service and Repairs Manager where he will oversee the growth of this sector of the Drake business. Collins will continue to pass on his wealth of knowledge to Law.

Law is a Scotsman who started his working life as an apprentice boiler maker in his home country.

After emigrating to Australia, Law progressed through a number of positions in the manufacturing scene before transitioning to corporate roles including National Asset Management and Compliance, which was his prior position at transport company Linx Cargo Care Group.

According to Drake Group General Manager, Khali Lake, the nationwide selection process was rigorous with Bill  standing out as the ideal candidate.

“Due to his wealth of experience, Bill has a well-rounded understanding of policies and procedures, human resources and customer needs,” said Lake. “We felt that the whole package Bill offered was ideal for what we needed in this role.

“Bill is a local who lives at Augustine Heights (Ipswich) and he is passionate about local community issues including training and apprentice management.”

“As the business has grown much bigger in recent years, particularly with the O’Phee acquisition, we have realised the need to evolve procedurally. With his broad experience across a number of disciplines, we believe Bill has the right skill set to take the business through the next cycle,” said Khali, who was also keen to congratulate Steve Collins for his monumental efforts in the Production Managers role over many years.

“On behalf of the Drake Group I’d like to thank Steve for his tireless efforts in the role. It’s really hard to put into words how much he’s done for the business.

“We’re really excited to now have Bill on board and also to see Steve utilising his considerable talents in his new role,” he said.
