Sarah Head of Echuca Secondary College was the 50,000th person to visit the ATA’s Road Ahead travelling exhibition which aims to spread the word about great careers in the industry and teach visitors how to share the road safely with trucks.
“The Road Ahead made me more aware of what it’s like to be a truckie and of the responsibility involved in driving a truck,” said Sarah.
“When I get my licence, I’ll make sure I just do one thing at a time so I can concentrate just on my driving. I will wait for trucks when they turn, give them space and not get in their blind spots.
“My whole opinion of who truckies are changed since visiting The Road Ahead. They are not just the people with beer guts and beards, and what they do is more complicated than I thought.”
ATA Chief Executive, Stuart St Clair, welcomed the news of the 50,000th visitor.
“Our aim is for the exhibition to reach half a million people from all corners of the country over the next decade,” said Mr St Clair.
“Since its inception in 2008, the Road Ahead has visited every state and territory, presenting to schools, colleges and shows.
“Students take a real interest in the program and develop a better understanding about job prospects in the trucking industry.
“Often, students see driving as the only component of what we do. If that isn’t something they’re interested in, they may not think twice about trucking as a career path.
“The Road Ahead introduces them to the many challenges they will experience and the variety of opportunities we have available for them.”
