The Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA) has addressed the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) last week seeking nationalisation of the 160km radius log book exemption for rural carriers, which is already in place in New South Whales and Queensland.
ALRTA said the exemption was a “common sense approach” to reducing paperwork for local drivers in rural and regional areas, where congestion is lower, average speed limits higher and the economic base spread over a larger area than urban or metropolitan centres.
“The primary aim of the Heavy Vehicle National Law is to reduce or remove regulatory differences between States and we have argued strongly that the 160km exemption in NSW and QLD is a prime candidate for national application,” ALRTA said.
