The fastest-growing segment of trucks in Australia is the B-double prime mover with a rated GCM of over 60 tonnes, according to the latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
The number of trucks with a GCM of over 60 tonnes registered in Australia has increased 49.3% in the past five years. In this period the total number of prime movers registered in Australia has only grown 18.2%, demonstrating the industry’s preference for B-double rated vehicles. As of March 2010, over 50% of all prime movers registered in Australia were rated at over 60 tonnes GCM.
Over the same five-year period, registrations of rigid trucks with a GVM of over 20 tonnes rose 29.8% while those with a GVM of less than 20 tonnes grew by just 14.3%. Some regional differences were also picked up by the survey with the increase in B-doubles being strongest in Victoria. The Northern Territory has the highest proportion of prime movers rated at over 60 tonnes, at 82.8%.
