A rest area on the Bells Line of Road in New South Wales will be reopened to provide an extra option for heavy vehicle drivers to stop and manage fatigue.
According to Transport for NSW, the eastbound parking bay – located about seven kilometres east of Bilpin – had been closed due to concerns over illegal dumping and antisocial behaviour.
However, the ongoing closure of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass and associated increase in heavy vehicle traffic on the Bells Line of Road has resulted in calls from the freight industry for the truck parking bay to be reinstated.
“The closure of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass has resulted in increased use of the Darling Causeway and Bells Line of Road, placing greater emphasis on the need for accessible rest opportunities along this corridor,” said Transport for NSW Executive Director, Damien Pfeiffer.
“We’ve listened to the freight industry and reopening the Bilpin truck parking bay will provide critical support for drivers navigating longer journeys on this temporary detour.
“It will support heavy vehicle drivers to meet their regulated fatigue management obligations under the Heavy Vehicle National Law, improving safety for all road users and reducing the risk of fatigue-related incidents.”
Transport for NSW has provided Hawkesbury City Council with $45,000 to support the reopening of the truck parking area, including vegetation management, waste management, safety and surface improvements.
Work is scheduled to start soon, with the truck parking bay to reopen next month.
Further improvements to the parking bay are planned under the Australian Government’s Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program.
