Daimler has presented the new Mercedes-Benz Aerodynamics Trailer at the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hanover, Germany as part of the company’s Aerodynamics Truck and Trailer initiative that drastically reduces drag and fuel consumption.
According to Daimler, the Aerodynamics Trailer that was designed and developed by Mercedes-Benz, reduces the drag of the entire articulated vehicle by up to 18 per cent. Practical tests confirm that fuel savings of 4.5 percent are attainable in a long-distance haulage with a 40-tonne articulated vehicle incorporating the Aerodynamics Trailer.
The trailer’s body measures 13.6 metres and is designed for refrigerated goods transport. It also accommodates all the customary day-to-day requirements of haulage operations, from ground clearance through approach to departure angles to user-friendly operation of the rear portal.
A key feature of the aerodynamic concept is the ‘boat tail’, a rear end taper with a maximum length of 400 mm. The tail's elements are hinged, allowing access to the load compartment. The wings of the rear end taper are made of aluminium, while the side panels feature an elegant curved form.
The partnership of Daimler Trucks and renowned trailer specialist Schmitz Cargobull formed the construction of the Aerodynamics Trailer.
