Victorian waste management company Ellwaste recently made the decision to implement high productivity vehicles into its fleet, starting with a PBS-approved skel built by Victorian trailer manufacturer Freighter.
Ellwaste’s first PBS vehicle is a 15-metre six-axle dog skel, carrying two 6.1-metre hooklift bins offering a total payload of 36-tonnes.
According to Stephen Elliott, Operations Manager at Ellwaste, the new PBS combination will give the company plenty of flexibility. “The new unit effectively increases our productivity by 33 per cent. Moving from two bins to three, we can now increase the weight since the rigid and skel combination is classed as a single trailer,” he says, noting that the vehicle has also altered the company’s work schedule.
“Our operators have gone from a three-day trip of collecting waste from transfer stations, councils and private contractors down to just two days. In a five-day week, we now have that extra day to pick more jobs, and that’s where we see the value of PBS raising productivity levels.”
In addition, the extra space on the front of the skel accommodates for the hooklift and drawbar. To complete the combination, an existing Mack truck was fitted with another bin along with a 20-tonne hooklift.
