The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) will hold a three-month consultation period to refine the requirements of making electronic stability control mandatory on all dangerous goods tank trailers.
In a letter to dangerous goods operators, the NSW EPA Director of Hazardous Incidents and Environmental Health, Craig Lamberton, said electronic stability control would be required from January 1, 2019 on all dangerous goods tank trailers operating in NSW (including petrol, LPG and corrosives) that are heavy vehicles.
“While some companies are already well advanced in meeting this outcome, all tanker companies operating in NSW will be required to provide annual progress reports to the EPA outlining the proportion of their fleet that has electronic stability control installed and commissioned. These reports will be posted on the EPA website,” Mr Lamberton said.
The NSW plan follows the recommendations made by NSW Deputy Coroner Carmel Forbes during her 2011 inquest into the fatal crash of a fuel tanker at East Lynne in 2009.
