The NSW Government has commenced the widening of Sydney’s M5 West Motorway between Camden Valley Way at Prestons and King Georges Road at Beverley Hills. This road is part of the vital link between the Hume Highway and Port Botany and the additional lane being constructed in both directions will mean faster journeys for the 90,000 motorists who use it daily.
This particular infrastructure project was a key election commitment by the NSW Liberals and Premier Barry O’Farrell was enthusiastic about the potential time savings for all motorists using the M5. “More than half of motorists travelling eastbound on the M5 leave the motorway before the start of the M5 East Tunnel so this project will provide real benefits for tens of thousands of motorists,” he said.
The $400 million widening project is being funded by Interlink Roads with the NSW Government contributing $50 million towards the costs of noise reduction walls and other noise mitigation measures.“The M5 West widening aims to deliver travel time savings of up to 12 minutes along the length of the Motorway heading west in the evening peak,” said NSW Minister for Roads, Duncan Gay.
Work will also include resurfacing the entire road, as well as bridge upgrades, a new motorway control centre and improved travel information for motorists. The new work, estimated to support 500 jobs during the construction phase is due for completion towards the end of 2014, weather permitting.
