A flawless solution

Reliability coupled with exceptional levels of service have kept Elliott’s Landscape Supplies coming back to BPW Transpec time and time again. Having completely moved away from tippers, Cargo Floor moving floor systems from BPW Transpec are now across the entire fleet.

Elliott’s Landscape Supplies hauls landscape products throughout NSW, returning to its Tumut base, nestled near the Snowy Mountains, with wood chips for Visy Pulp and Paper, along with transporting waste plastic from Visy Tumut to Visy Melbourne seven days a week.

Each truck and trailer unit travels in excess of 400,000 kilometres a year, working around the clock, with two drivers allocated to each truck. Elliott’s takes great pride in its fleet, and every unit wearing the company’s blue, green and gold livery is kept in immaculate condition – and that’s just the way Managing Director Grant Elliott likes it.

The business was started in 1961 by his father Graham Elliott, after he purchased his first truck and began working in road construction. He went on to establish a sand and gravel yard, eventually adding pine bark into the mix, which saw the business flourish.

Grant joined the family business at just 16-years-of-age where he was given the opportunity to pursue his passion for trucks, soon taking on the role of truck driver. When his father Graham was injured during an incident unloading grain, Grant made the switch from the open road to becoming more heavily involved in the company’s operations. Together the father and son team have grown their business from strength to strength.

Originally operating a fleet of tippers, Elliott’s now operates moving floor trailers exclusively. All nine of its trailers are built by Barker Trailers and fitted with Cargo Floors.

Elliott’s moved from tippers to moving floors after its client Visy ceased allowing tippers onto its sites for improved safety. “We only have moving floor trailers and sold our last tipper, a truck and dog, in 2017, after selling our pine bark processing business,” reveals Grant. “We now concentrate only on bulk haulage and let the new owner look after product processing and sales.”

Featuring a solid construction and low tare weights, the BPW Cargo Floor is designed to allow for maximum payloads. This innovative moving floor system is suited to everything from wood chip and mulch, to food products such as potatoes, carrots and corn, and even palletised freight.

The Cargo Floor system uses floor profiles that run parallel to each other, with the drive system moving the floor profiles back and forth through the use of three hydraulic cylinders. There is a range of aluminium floor profile options available, from lightweight applications through to heavy-duty sections suitable for the recycling and waste industry. Between the floor profiles is a seal made from a unique plastic composite, which is designed to ensure the load cannot leak, and dust or rain can’t get inside.

Elliott’s added the first moving floor trailers into its fleet back in 2002 and they too were Barker trailers with Cargo Floors. From that initial order of four moving floor units, Grant says the business hasn’t looked back. “We’ve purchased these ever since. With the bulk products we are hauling, moving floors are a safer option for us than using tippers. The other huge benefit over tippers is in the cubic capacity we can achieve,” Grant says.

The latest order includes two new units, again featuring Cargo Floors. These were delivered in September 2019 and are used to transport approximately 1000 tonne of pine wood chips each day (around 18 loads) from a local Tumut sawmill to Visy Pulp and Paper situated 13 kilometres away.

Elliott’s has relied on a range of BPW products for decades. The strong relationship the business already had with the brand, together with the high levels of trust in its products is what initially led Grant to BPW Transpec and Cargo Floor systems.

“Every trailer that we own runs on BPW and we wouldn’t have it any other way,” Grant adds. “When I was very young, Dad told me a story that he built his own single axle tipping trailer and put a BPW axle under it. Years later he broke the axle. Back then he probably would have had it overloaded, but he contacted BPW and they replaced the axle. He specified BPW on all of his equipment from then on. The team at BPW advises us on products and the correct usage and maintenance. They understand our business and know what is best suited to our applications.”
