Early work on the Goonoo Goonoo Road upgrade in Tamworth, New South Wales, has begun which is expected to benefit residents and transporters.
The Australian and NSW Governments are jointly investing $40 million for the duplication of Goonoo Goonoo Road, between Jack Smyth Drive and Calala Lane.
The project will deliver two lanes in each direction to address congestion, provide for future traffic growth and improve road safety.
The upgrade will also include a set of traffic signals at the intersection of Calala Lane, a roundabout at the intersection of Craigends Lane, and intersection improvements for The Ringers Road and Greg Norman Drive.
Major work on the Goonoo Goonoo Road duplication is expected to start in December 2024 and be completed in early 2027, weather permitting.
Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said that upon completion, benefits will also apply to the transport industry.
“The upgrade will reduce travel times, increase reliability for people, business as well as freight, improve safety and deliver a road network which facilitates both local access and regional connectivity,” she said.
State Member for Tamworth, Kevin Anderson, said the Government is working hard to deliver much-needed infrastructure projects.
“Goonoo Goonoo Road is the gateway to our city and locals and visitors alike will benefit greatly from the duplication of a road which connects our residential areas to our worldclass sporting and entertainment precincts,” he said.
“We have delivered on our promise to get the plans drawn up that make this upgrade possible, and I want to thank our community for their ongoing patience as we moved towards construction this year.”
