The first section of improvement work on the Gwydir Highway in New South Wales has been completed.
The NSW Government recently provided $2.4 million to upgrade a section of the highway near Browns Creek to increase safety and network resilience.
The work included widening the road and upgrading two kilometres of pavement as well as repairs to five culverts.
These improvements will reportedly benefit freight operators who rely on this key east-west link.
“The drainage improvements will allow the highway to better cope with heavy rain and flooding events, reducing closure times and traffic impacts which means we can keep locals, tourists and freight operators moving,” said Transport for NSW Acting Regional Director West, Holly Davies.
“Further to this, the work will reduce maintenance and repair costs and the subsequent delays for motorists who travel on this corridor every day.”
Further upgrades and repair work will take place at this location later this year.
“Safety on NSW roads is our number one priority and the work completed on the Gwydir Highway delivers improvements where they’re most needed,” Davies said.
“Road users travel long distances in regional NSW and important upgrades such as this help to ensure they make it safely to their destination.”
In other news, light and heavy vehicles will receive penalties for speeding at two trial sites in regional New South Wales from 1 July.
