DP World has commenced construction on a new $18 million Fremantle Rail Interchange project which will strengthen Western Australia’s freight network and improve supply chain efficiency.

The project will deliver a new dedicated rail gate connection linking DP World’s Fremantle container operations directly with the North Quay Rail Terminal – streamlining container transfers within the port precinct and cutting more than 20,000 truck movements on internal roads a year.

By shifting more freight by rail (up from 22 per cent to 33 per cent of the total freight volume), the project will provide measurable productivity and sustainability gains, reduce emissions, ease congestion and improve cost efficiency for WA exporters and importers.

“DP World is committed to building a more connected and efficient logistics network for WA,” said DP World Executive Vice President Oceania, Nicolaj Noes.

“This new rail gate connection will improve the reliability and efficiency of rail operations at North Quay and make it easier for our customers to move cargo sustainably and cost-effectively.

“It’s a strong example of how government and industry can work together to deliver infrastructure that improves productivity, reduces costs and drives long-term economic value.”

The Fremantle Rail Interchange is part of DP World’s nearly $1 billion commitment to upgrade Australia’s port infrastructure by 2028.

It’s supported by a series of national projects which will enhance rail connectivity, lift operational efficiency and strengthen supply chain resilience.

Together, these investments are bolstering the integration between DP World’s ports, rail, landside logistics and warehousing operations while creating a more connected, multimodal network – resulting in smarter, faster and more reliable freight pathways for customers.

Deputy Premier of WA and Minister for Transport, Rita Saffioti, recently attended the official groundbreaking of the Fremantle Rail Interchange project.

Following her visit, she outlined how the project highlights the strong collaboration between the State Government and the private sector to deliver modern, sustainable freight infrastructure for WA.

“This investment supports the State Government’s vision for a more efficient and sustainable freight network across WA to strengthen our economy and deliver quality local jobs,” she said.

“By shifting more freight from road to rail out of Fremantle Port, this investment will reduce congestion, improve road safety, cut emissions and strengthen Fremantle’s position as a vital gateway for trade and jobs in our state.

“This project will also play an important role in helping to reduce congestion on our roads during the upcoming closure of the Fremantle Traffic Bridge by reducing heavy truck movements in and around the port precinct.”

In other news, a national initiative to make steel production greener and more sustainable has launched at Monash University.
