“At the moment, I am the sole W&C employee in the Australian market, so I am a jack of all trades,” Mark explains. “I have an almost blank sheet of paper to work with. My role in the short term along with the obvious need for product sales will see a focus on brand and product awareness and ensuring that we get the basics right.”
Although W&C product has been available in Australia before, W&C has decided to take control of the Australian distribution. “We manufacture all types of trailer suspensions; primary, auxiliary, steerable or non-steer rigid, air ride or mechanical,” says Mark. “And we want the Australian industry to know who we are and what we can offer. Therefore we will progressively set up a suitable network of dealers who are able to provide W&C’s clientele with the right service support after the sale.“
Like many in the industry, Mark Boon is a mechanic by trade and has moved up through the ranks. “I have spent the last 20 years in the commercial transport industry, working for companies like Vehicle Efficiency Products, Holland Hitch, York Transport Equipment and Krueger Transport in various Sales, Service and Management roles before coming on board with W&C.”
As W&C’s new Sales & Service Manager, Mark Boon has a clear economical vision. “W&C has a very private feel to the business. The two original owners still sit at the helm and they are both very hands on. In their home market W&C is known for its ability to act quickly. They identify opportunities, propose solutions to a customer’s individual situation and respond quickly with a finished solution. These are activities that larger corporate companies tend to shy away from because of their long and drawn out internal processes. I am confident that we can adopt an Australian version of that level of urgency to provide us with a real point of difference.”
According to Mark, his principal job definition is to make W&C a key supplier to the Australian transport industry, which is quite a unique environment to work in. “If you are prepared to really get involved through industry organisations and make a positive contribution and not just turn up and take a wage then it will definitely reward you. The level of camaraderie and friendship even between competitors in the industry is unbelievable. There is almost always a friend or a friend of a friend who can help you out of any given sticky situation.
I would definitely recommend the industry to prospective employees because the options are endless. The industry really can take you anywhere you want to go.”
