US component manufacturer Meritor will display the new LogixDrive, the first intelligent drive axle system, at the IAA Hanover Commercial Vehicle Show in Germany.
“LogixDrive is an example of Meritor's forward-thinking and focus on product innovation that leads to fuel savings and improved efficiency,” Vice President of Engineering, Joe Elbehairy said. “LogixDrive bundles technologies in one system. It provides customers with efficiency gains by optimising the system using an electronically controlled, fail-safe design.”
According to Meritor, the LogixDrive actively “thinks” using a performance logic system, which is anchored by an electronic control unit with dedicated sensors measuring speed, braking and torque to optimise axle efficiency. Additionally, the LogixDrive system utilises the Meritor lube management system to actively apply or reduce axle lubrication based on current truck performance and driving conditions.
LogixDrive addresses the two main areas of power loss in drive axles: gear and bearing friction and oil churning due to gear rotation. Adding or reducing lubricant on the gear set during the vehicle's operation improves efficiency and fuel savings, as well as reduces lubrication breakdown.
“LogixDrive employs sensors to measure oil temperature and combines that with torque and speed information to reduce lubrication in high-speed/low-torque conditions or increase lubrication in low-speed/high-torque conditions,” Senior Director of Engineering, Marco Bassi said. “Meritor's engineers employ advanced controls to develop intelligent axles that display tangible customer benefits.”
