The Monaro Highway is being upgraded to deliver improved safety, freight efficiency and travel benefits.
Construction of a new flyover and interchange at the Monaro Highway and Lanyon Drive intersection is now underway.
This construction is the latest in a series of upgrades which will change road conditions for stretches in the Australian Capital Territory’s Tuggeranong and Woden Valley regions as well as southern New South Wales.
As part of the project, 40 bridge girders will need to be lifted onto the piers to form part of the bridge structure.
Twenty bridge girders are in place on the northern side of the project so far.
To allow for concrete girders to be safely lifted onto the piers, Lanyon Drive between the northbound and southbound carriageways will be closed from between 17 October and 20 October from 7pm to 5am.
Detours through the Hume industrial area along Sheppard Street will be in place to access Monaro Highway.
Additionally, an alternative route for road users travelling from Jerrabomberra to north Canberra is to turn right onto Lanyon Drive at Tompsitt Drive and then use Canberra Avenue.
The Monaro Highway upgrade will also include:
- A new southbound flyover on the Monaro Highway over Lanyon Drive (including three-metre-wide sealed shoulders)
- The highway road pavement upgraded from David Warren Road, near the Alexander Maconochie Centre, through to Sheppard Street in Hume (including three-metre-wide sealed shoulders)
- A new widened bridge on the northbound carriageway over Dog Trap Creek/Woden Creek north of Lanyon Drive, including an improved northbound merge from Lanyon Drive onto the Monaro Highway
- The new bridge structure will have Indigenous artwork applied to some of the external elements.
Construction of the flyover and interchange is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
