The Australian Road Transport Suppliers Association (ARTSA) has today published the second edition of its quarterly report on Australia’s truck and trailer population.
According to ARTSA CEO, Rob Perkins, the second set of data shows a “slight slowdown” in new registrations compared to the June results, with the prime mover and rigid truck market still well down on the historic high of 2007.
Since the last report issued in July, 1487 new prime mover were registered in Australia, while 1156 were retired – resulting in a 0.3 per cent increase of the overall population. The total fleet size has now breached the 100,000-unit threshold, standing at 100,129.
The rigid truck population grew by 810 to 175,561 units compared to the July report – a 0.5 per cent increase. Interestingly, the dog trailer population grew almost twice as much during the same time, at 0.9 per cent.
Overall, 1863 new trailers entered the fleet since the July report, making for a modest 0.8 per cent increase. The classic semi-trailer market saw the largest increase at 0.78 per cent, with 1175 additional registrations.
All up, the market now stands at 231,708 units, with average growth just below the 13,000-unit mark.
However, ARTSA pointed out that the figure could be bolstered by a range of pre-2014 vehicles being registered for the first time. “New trailer registrations for 2013 and 2012 are at or above the previous historic highs of 2008 and are still growing as these vehicles continue to enter the register for the first time.”
ARTSA’s quarterly report is part of a series of publications documenting the size and make-up of the nation’s transport equipment industry and is building on a set of raw data first presented at the Global Truck & Trailer Leaders Summit in Melbourne in April 2014.
