Melbourne-based transport company, Metropolitan Express, has been awarded a new contract by plasterboard manufacturer USG Boral.

According to Metropolitan Express, the contract will see the company provide on-going distribution support for USG Boral's operations across Victoria.

“As part of this new service partnership, we have purchased a variety of new Scania vehicles for our fleet that incorporate the latest in safety applications developed by Metropolitan Express,” said Metropolitan Express Director, Sam Pantou.

"Most of the vehicles will incorporate the features of the patented FPSS (Fall Prevention Safety System) that Metropolitan Express successfully trialled in the steel industry and is now very popular at major building sites around Melbourne."

Pantou added, "The base distribution fleet will utilise the proven expertise of remote Hiab 377 cranes coupled with a European designed knuckle, which will vastly improve building site access and overall safety for the personnel involved in the task."

The CIMC-built truck bodies also use a new retractable tarp system supplied by Rice Graphic Images. Named The Look, the fully modular retractable tarp and aluminium frame sliding system can be operated by one person and slides in either direction along the full length of the trailer or rigid truck body to cover or uncover the load.

"The sliding system allows much easier and quicker access for the driver to roll back the curtains in order to obtain access to the load and crane. We are in the early stages of our implementation and expect this new design to be a major success," Pantou commented.
