The Strategic Vehicle Safety and Environment Group (SVSEG) met in Canberra last week to discuss the proposed ADR works program for the next three years.
Known as the prime reference group concerned with ADR matters and the National Road Safety Strategy, SVSEG said the Federal Government’s anti red tape agenda would directly affect the Group’s ADR work program.
“Additional ADR requirements will only be accepted if other ADR requirements are withdrawn. This situation provides an opportunity for industry to nominate specific ADR requirements that should be withdrawn or reduced in effect,” the Group said in a statement.
ADR projects to be considered going forward are lane departure warning systems (2014) and the amendment of ADR 35/03 (Commercial Vehicle Brakes) and 38/03 (Trailer Brakes) in 2015.
Adaptive lighting, Advanced Seatbelt Reminder systems and Advanced Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS) are also on the SVSEG agenda going forward.
In the long-term, the Group will also reconsider the categories of vehicles and definitions used within the ADRs and look at the sizes and clearances of external dimensions of vehicles as well as axle configurations. Road train and B-double heavy truck couplings, electrical, pneumatic and dimensional requirements will also be reassessed until 2020.
