Toll NQX National Linehaul Manager, John King, has been recognised with the Industry Excellence Award from the Queensland Trucking Association for helping make Australia’s road freight industry safer. The award recognises those with a long-term industry background showing proven positive involvement in Australian trucking.
King has over 40 years’ experience in the industry and has contributed tirelessly towards compliance policy and safety outcomes within Toll NQX. The QTA said King had been instrumental in leading change and had “significantly impacted on the broader road freight industry in Australia,” as well as implementing many safety prevention programs and innovations which had “set a benchmark in the industry.”
“His tireless dedication and commitment to safety in the road freight industry has been truly inspirational and is recognised widely,” said the QTA citation. “His relentless pursuit of safety standards is driven by a level of compassion and concern for the wellbeing of all staff and all drivers unsurpassed in the industry.”
King is well known as being a lead contributor in the piloting of BAB and ABB quad combinations within Toll NQX which has led to a reduction in rollovers, improved safety outcomes and productivity for the company.
He also implemented 95km/h speed limits throughout Toll NQX, was responsible for installing GPS-enabled telematics in trucks, introduced the company to the TruckSafe accreditation scheme and installed cameras in linehaul vehicles which monitor driving over millions of kilometres annually.
King said over the past decade in particular there had been strong collaboration between Toll NQX management and staff to push the safety agenda and become the leader in the industry for overall on-road compliance.
“While technologies such as black boxes and in-vehicle cameras have led to a reduction in incidents, drivers themselves play a large role in safety and we are continually promoting the sharing and adoption of best practice across Toll NQX,” said King. “Having people go to work and return home safely is of paramount importance to me and Toll NQX.”
