Toll Group has commenced operations inside its new $24 million freight terminal in Hobart, Tasmania.
According to Toll, the 17,000 square metre facility on 6.8 hectares in the Brighton Transport Hub is the most modern and efficient transport terminal in the state.
The Premier of Tasmania, the Hon. Will Hodgman MP, joined Toll Group Managing Director, Brian Kruger, to officially open the intermodal freight terminal in Tasmania’s newest freight hub. “Toll Group’s investment in the Brighton Transport Hub is a significant and welcomed investment in Tasmanian infrastructure,” Premier Hodgman said.
According to Kruger, the facility will benefit Toll’s customers and the Tasmanian economy through improved domestic and international freight services. “Toll has been a supporter of the development of the Brighton precinct for many years,” he said. “We see this as a long-term investment in Tasmania’s freight future, which has obvious flow-on economic benefits for Hobart and beyond.
“This $24 million investment underpins other key investments we’re making in the state, that includes the purchase of next-generation replacement vessels for our Bass Strait shipping service earmarked for 2018, as well as the redevelopment of the wharf and rail terminals in Burnie and Launceston.”
The new facility is also expected to reduce the amount of trucks coming in and out of central Hobart. “Relocating to the new hub in Brighton will result in 42 fewer B-Doubles and 100 fewer semi-trailer movements from the city of Hobart each day,” Kruger added. “It also allows us to increase the amount of freight we can carry via rail. More freight on trains will mean fewer trucks on Tasmanian roads.”
The opening of the Hobart facility follows the recent openings of Toll’s new freight facilities in Sydney and Brisbane as well as the commencement of construction of a new freight terminal in Melbourne.
