Paul Freestone, Managing Director of Victorian-based Freestone’s Transport, and the late Matt Nind who worked for Australian recycling company, Transpacific Industries, have won the WFD Chalmers Award.
The award, which the Victorian Transport Association (VTA) presents each year, recognises services to the transport and logistics industry in support of the VTA and its members.
“Through his extensive service to the industry via his involvement with the VTA, Paul has been passionate about safety, including the continued policy platform of the VTA that drug and alcohol testing should be made mandatory across the road transport industry in Australia,” said VTA CEO, Neil Chambers.
Announcing Nind as the other winner marked the first time in the 13-year history of the Chalmers Award that recognition for outstanding service was bestowed posthumously.
Nind was a former senior manager of Cleanaway, now part of Transpacific Industries. He presided over the VTA’s waste division, the Victorian Waste Management Association (VWMA), from 2010 until he died of cancer in January 2013.
“Matt brought many leadership qualities to his role as President of the VWMA, was highly respected by his peers, and sought out regularly by ministers and senior government officials for his considered advice and industry knowledge,” Chambers added. “We miss Matt greatly, but his memory will live on in the history of the VTA and the VWMA through Matt’s receipt of the WFD Chalmers Award.”
