West-Trans skips and hooks towards solution

Finding the right business partners is critical to a company’s long-term viability. That was part of Ian Malouf’s thinking when he founded Sydney-based Dial A Dump Industries (DADI) more than 30 years ago with the objective to build a company that would represent more than just a traditional waste transport business, but a brand that could add value to the industry.

Thanks to West-Trans’ catalogue of waste transport equipment, Ian’s DADI business has transformed from the traditional one truck start-up to a multi-million dollar company that not only boasts a versatile and multiple capacity waste vehicle fleet, but also operates its own transfer centre in Alexandria and a state-of-the-art recycling plant at Eastern Creek.

According to DADI Fleet Operations Manager, Shane Hindman, the company owes a debt of gratitude to its suppliers like West-Trans, who have supported the brand since its inception.

“One of the main reasons why we have continued to use West-Trans is that the equipment, whether it’s a skip-loader or hooklift, has one of the highest power-to-weight ratios in the market,” he says. “Low weight is a key advantage that helps us maximise the overall payload and loading balance, and keeps us within State Government regulations.”

To ensure compliance with NSW Roads and Maritime Service’s policies and regulations.  DADI’s 40 vehicle fleet – including 28 6×4 rigid trucks supplied by Isuzu and Iveco that are fitted with West-Trans skip-loaders – undergo a strict regime of regular maintenance checks. To ensure the fleet remains as up-to-date as possible, Shane says all trucks and equipment are subject to constant review and revision.

“We deal directly with West-Trans’ engineers and can make a strategic decision with every purchase and every hire. In turn, West-Trans understands our operation and always keeps us up-to-date with new models in the market, while providing a cost that’s viable for us.”

According to Shane, DADI favoured West-Trans’ skip-loaders and hooklifts even before he began his tenure at the company in 2015. “The skip-loaders are all remote operated and very user-friendly. It’s a robust design that uses high tensile steel hexagonal arm systems,” he explains, noting that the skip-loaders can accommodate 10m³ bins.

“All of those reasons factored into our purchase in March 2016 of 10 ‘MXS 150’ skip-loaders, which are able to operate to a work limit weight of 15 tonnes. The skip-loaders come equipped with emergency stops, a vital tool during the loading process if a weight imbalance occurs or if a hydraulics error comes up. When that happens, the skip-loader and even the hooklifts will automatically shutdown.”

According to Shane, the most recent West-Trans order will have a significant impact on the business: “The MXS skip-loaders are all able to load and unload within a minute, so that helps increase productivity per truck along with improved safety,” he says. “We always promise our customers a rapid turnaround and flawless service and thanks to West-Trans Equipment, we remain able to deliver on time every time.

Looking ahead to the rest of 2017, Shane says Dial A Dump Industries will continue to monitor new waste technology both locally and aboard, and may consider another West-Trans order.

“It’s not just about being the the premier waste transport service. It’s about adding value on every level from efficiency to sustainability and safety.

“That’s why it’s important that DADI has the right people and the right suppliers such as West-Trans Equipment in place to make it happen.”
