Each day, over 1000 trucks pass through Nhill, on Victoria’s Western Highway, with around 250 swapping trailers – however the current trailer exchange site only has 23 spaces.
Winslow Constructors is set to begin work on the new site later this year.
The Australian Government’s contribution to the trailer exchange is funded from its Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program, which it set up in 2008.
According to the Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese, this project will deliver a larger, better and safer trailer exchange.
He said, “Subject to the new facility’s final designs, up to a hundred trucks at a time will be able to swap trailers at the halfway point between Adelaide and Melbourne.”
The Victorian Roads and Ports Minister, Tim Pallas also commented, “The Gillard and Brumby Labor governments are working together to deliver improved transport links to make freight operations more efficient and deliver a better transport system for all Victorians.”
